The rider has 2 ½ minutes for riding the horse inside the cattle-herd. He chooses a cattle and prevent it from returning to the herd. The goal is to demonstrate American Quarter Horses movements and the horse’s athleticism. The horse, which is suitable for cutting, is called “Cow Sense“.
Dressage has the main role for reining. A properly trained horse gallops with the cowboy or -girl and uses the hindquarters for proper stop. Then goes rapid turnaround (spin) and 180-degree turn on hindquarters (rollback). Both the rider and the horse must have strong nerves. The exams in Reining are the most demanding in Western Riding.
I personally find the discipline “Western Pleasure” very pleasant. It must be a pleasure for rider and horse to ride the horse comfortable and fluent in 3 basic gaits on a loose rein. The assessment is based on the willingness and gait. The rider must immediately give to horse “invisible” help. In Western Pleasure the highest concentration of Cowboy or Cowgirl is required.
The Western Riding – as its name would suggest – is a discipline, that judges horses on its numerous flying lead changes. This can be compared with the daily work on a tranche. The horse has to work freely and easily and to carry the rider comfortably without hardships over hill and dale. The Western Riding is a truly demanding discipline. The riding quality, the lead changes, the style in the three gaits and the horse’s existing intelligence and working efficiency are evaluated.
The discipline “Working Cow Horse” consists of 2 parts. First must be performed a reining pattern. After that a single cow is released into the arena. The rider and his horse have two minutes to first hold the cow at a shorter end of the arena, then to run along the rail of the arena and to turn at least 1x in each direction. Lastly, the rider maneuvers the cow into the center of the arena and cause the cow to circle an eight.
The trail expects from the horses a general obedience. A trail course includes at least six obstacles. There are required strong nerves of horse and rider and rider’s confidence in the horse. The team has to open a gate, without giving a cow possibility to come through the gate. According to course there are different disciplines like a bridge or a seesaw, the rider and his horse must carefully ride over these obstacles. Next they have to come over lying rails without touching them. Popular as well is the formation of rails like “U” or “L”. The rider and horse ride them over backwards. A trail horse should have strong nerves, be prompt and thoughtful.
In the Western Horsemanship is estimated the rider’s efficiency. There are proofed prompts and straight seat of rider during one session. The tasks should be performed diligently and faultless, and this required reliable team horse/rider. The performed tasks are “riding straight lines”, “transitions walk-to-trot”, “turns on the haunches and stop” or “ride straight and in a circle”. The rider performs 80 consist of Western Pleasure exercises as already mentioned. The rider is judged in this discipline contrary to “Pleasure”.
The discipline “Super Horse” is a very serious discipline. This exam combines elements of individual disciplines “Reining”, “Trail” and “Western Riding”. The horse has to prove its excellent versatility. “Super Horse” is developed by the EWU.
