Barehoof care

For many years horses were shod with iron and it continues till now. They make it already since the Middle Ages. First evidences of hoofcare are known from the 1st millennium BC. The hooves were provided with simple means such as leather, straw or bast shoes. Today, the modern horse’s care is slightly different.

Advantages of keeping barehoof

The biggest advantage is the natural blood circulation in the hoof. Because of the iron horseshoe the blood supply is restricted. So the nourishments do not reach the hoof and are stowed and destroyed in the upper extremities. The elasticity and shock-absorbing properties of the natural hooves are thus no longer guaranteed. Further advantages of barehoof horses are:

  • As mentioned: increased blood circulation. Improves the health of the horse
  • Faster recovery after training
  • Stronger and thicker hoof wall
  • Reduced risk of injuries
  • Less stumbling, slipping
  • Increased grip
  • Smooth step
  • More energy and temperament
  • Stress-free trimming. Firing/nailing goes away
  • Shock absorption and thereby protection the extremities

Barehoof may deform after the transition and twist as nature intended. The horse feels the ground again and becomes slip-resistant. A barefoot horse is resistant to diseases due to improved blood circulation. Please ask for professional Barehoof care!

Transition to Barehoof

Horseshoe from the Middle Ages

Why do they hold on to old standards?

There is no reason to shoe the horses with horseshoes as it happened in the Middle Ages. Today are available modern, high-quality horseshoes or other alternatives for everyday walking with horse in the field or on streets.

Transition to barehoof

There are basic terms how the horse keeping and its hoofcare should be provided. Hoofcare should take a big amount of time. In point of fact, the wild horse doesn’t need horseshoes, because the horn balances in the wear and regrowth.

Be careful when decreasing iron! Please ask the Barehoof Profi!

The cooperation of interested horse owners and hoofcare assistant is essential. The transition phase lasts about 5-10 months and depends on the condition of shod hooves, the health condition of the horse, it’s feeding, entertainment and metabolism.
